4 Organization Tips to Gain Some Control in 2021

The start of 2021 isn’t quite like the start of most years. With the world in flux, the typical resolutions we would make come January may be a bit more tempered...perhaps not quite as ambitious.

One great resolution everyone can make this year is to get more organized. As our lives increasingly center around the home—from work to school to vacation—streamlining our environments will lead to an increased sense of order and tranquility.

Organizing doesn’t have to turn into an overwhelming task, however. Here are four fairly simple organizational projects to help start your new year on the right foot.

1. Rethink your laundry room. More family members spending more time at home usually means more dirty clothes and linens...which might mean your laundry room has turned into an area of mass confusion. Adding a few key organizational items can quickly tame the beast, however. Add a sectionalized hamper for sorting dirty clothes, a corner shelf for a space-saving way to store detergent, dryer sheets, stain removers and more, and install an overhead rod for hanging clothes to air dry. Add an attractive basket for stray socks, and you’re on your way to a more orderly laundry room.

2. Tackle your clothes closet. If you can’t fit any more clothes in your closet or find what you want to wear, it’s time to get organized. Start by donating any clothing you haven’t worn in a year, including those items that still have tags on them. If you haven’t worn it yet, there’s a reason, so get rid of it. Then organize the remaining items by color or season—for example, hang tops from sleeveless to long-sleeved, and pants from light to dark. Take shoes out of their boxes and use organizers to store them neatly on the closet floor or door.

3. Revamp your kitchen cabinets. An organized kitchen cabinet will make meal-prep vastly easier. Start by discarding any items past their expiration date or that are never used. Then invest in storage solutions, such as clear canisters for storing flour, sugar, cereal, dried fruits and nuts, etc. Organize small items like spice jars and condiments on small risers so that you can see everything at once. Collect packets of tea, hot chocolate or sauce mixes in a small recipe file.

4. Streamline your desk. If you’re working from home, it’s essential that you get control of your desk area. Start by tossing old paperwork that’s no longer needed and storing any remaining essential paperwork in an accordion file or separate manila folders. Take some time to switch to paperless options for credit card and utility bills, as well as bank statements, to avoid excess paper build-up this year. Install a small shelving unit to keep essential work items handy, but off of your desktop.

Taking the time to make some simple yet important organizational changes will help you start off 2021 with less stress and in better control.
